Dr Tang's success in obtaining joint grant to BBSRC

Monday 26 September 2011

Professor Anthony T.S. Ho, Head of the Department released good news today:  I am very pleased to announce that Dr Lilian Tang’s joint grant application to BBSRC has been successful. The proposal received two excellent and one exceptional award from three reviewers during the evaluation process.

The details of the award are as follows:

Project title:  Investigation of stochastic variations in growth rate as the mechanism of drug tolerance in Myco bacterium tuberculosis.

The project is led by Prof. Johnjoe McFadden (Bioscience, FHMS), Lilian is one of the Co-investigators.

The grant is a collaborative 3 year proposal to investigate how the pathogen Mycobacterium tuberculosis survives in the presence of antibiotics. The project will employ 2 PDRA's, one a biologist and the second an engineer who will construct microfluidic devices for study of growth of individual cells of M. tuberculosis and measurement of their response to antibiotics.

The second RA will be working with Lilian on understanding of individual cell growth rate through analysing time-lapse images captured through microfluidic devices.

Total grant amount:  EC: £774,501 and RC Contribution: £619,601.

The amount for Computing is about £136,000 – still awaiting final confirmation from BBRSC.

Many congratulations to Lilian for her success – excellent effort and well done!
