DECC awarded for supporting computing placement students

Wednesday 3 October 2012

Prof Anthony TS Ho, Head of Department of Computing, was delighted to present an award to Mr Ahad Nujurally from the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) for supporting the Department's professional training year programme.

Only four of these awards (across the whole university) are granted to companies, which have shown deep commitments to our students. As an example, DECC provides training programmes (worth at least £4000) to placement students; these students have the opportunity to obtain a certificate in Oracle and learn how to use technical computing languages (such as Java and XML) in real-world applications and are given high level of responsibility. Some outstanding students are also offered permanent positions after their graduation. Click here to see a video blog of some our students at DECC.

DECC, which is a high profile government department, regulates the oil industry (mainly in the North Sea) and even provides software support for electricity companies. Ahad, who is the IT Project Manager, strongly encourages prospective placement students to apply at DECC. The deadline for this year's intake is on the 29th October 2012. At DECC, everyone is treated on the same level and there is usually no dress code, except when visiting clients. His advice on applying at DECC is not to "overdo" the curriculum vitae. For instance, one should not say he/she is an expert in Java, when he/she is not; it would be more appropriate to mention the number of years of experience with the programming language.
