Alan Woodward commented for Forbes on UN's role in Internet governance

Alan Woodward, a cyber security expert and a visiting professor of the Department, commented for the Forbes on the recent World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT-12) convened by ITU (International Telecommunication Union, a UN agency) which produced a revised set of International Telecommunication Regulations (ITRs). The updated ITRs are now extended to cover the Internet thus raising concerns about the UN's role in the Internet governance. Not all UN member states have signed the new ITRs, with some major nations like US, UK and Canada refused to sign. Although ITRs are not legally binding and will not come to effect until 2015, Alan said some legally binding agreements might finally appear in future. To see the full story, click here.
