Biography

Professor Anthony T.S. Ho (何东旋教授) was born in Hong Kong. He joined the Department of Computing, Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, University of Surrey, UK in 2006. He is Chair Professor of Multimedia Security and is currently Head of Department of Computing since 2010. Tony also leads the Multimedia, Security and Forensics research group in the Department.  He was the recipient of the prestigious Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Innovation in Engineering Award (slide 38) under the Security category for his research and commercialization work on digital watermarking in 2006. Under his leadership, Surrey Computing has been ranked three consecutive years as one of the top 150 Computer Science Departments in the World by ARWU 2014, ARWU 2013 and ARWU 2012 in terms of research quality and one of only 10 UK Universities in that band for the past three years. Recently, the Guardian University Guide 2015 has ranked the Department in ninth position out of more than 100 Computer Science Departments in the UK for teaching quality. Tony was a leading core member of the Surrey Computing-led international team that successfully won the bid to host the flagship IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing (ICASSP) 2019 in Brighton, UK.

Tony obtained his BSc(Hons) in Physical Electronics from Northumbria University in 1979, his MSc in Applied Optics from Imperial College London in 1980 and his PhD in Digital Image Processing from King's College London in 1983. After graduation, he worked in industry for 11 years in the UK and Canada. His first job was at ERA Technology, first as Senior Engineer and then Principal Engineer, where he actively involved in the research and development of target detection and identification algorithms for a pioneering subsurface radar system for plastic anti-personnel and anti-tank mine clearance in the Falklands. He moved to Vancouver, Canada in 1987 and worked as a Project Leader for MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates (MDA), involved in the delivery and installation of a satellite remote sensing image processing system for application in forestry monitoring and classification . From 1994 to 2005, he was a Senior Lecturer and then Associate Professor at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. While at NTU, he co-founded and became CEO of DataMark Technologies (DMT) in 1998, a company specialises in digital watermarking and steganography. DMT is now a subsidiary of Singapore Technologies Engineering, one of the largest engineering companies listed on the stock exchange in Singapore.

Tony has published around 140 articles in international journals and conference proceedings including 8 international  patents granted related to watermarking and steganography. He received a best paper award for a co-authored conference paper on camera model identification from IEVC 2012.  He is the founding Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Information Security and Applications (JISA) published by Elsevier.  Tony has also been appointed as an Associate Editor for IEEE Signal Processing Letters in January 2014 and more recently, as Area Editor for Signal Processing: Image Communication and Associate Editor for EURASIP Journal of Image and Video Processing. He was invited keynote speaker at the 1st ACM Workshop on Information Hiding and Multimedia Security (IHMMSec'2013) and IEEE International Conference on Advanced Infocomm Technology (ICAIT) 2010

Tony has been instrumental in leading the Department in establishing international strategic partnerships and collaboration related to research and teaching activities. The Department is one of the first in the Faculty to have successfully signed a number of MSc (4+1) and internship (UG and MSc) agreements recently with overseas universities including Zhejiang, UESTC, Donghua, City University of Hong Kong and Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology, with a few more expected to be signed in the pipeline. Recently, he was appointed as Guest Professor (2014-2017) by Wuhan University of Technology, China and by the University of Mauritius  to serve as external examiner (2013-2015) for their BSc Computer Science programmes.

Tony has also been very active and serves on a number of IEEE technical societies including as technical committee member on the IEEE Signal processing Society, Information Forensics and Security, IEEE Circuits and Systems Society, Multimedia Systems and Applications, and Visual Signal Processing and Communications.  He was Co-Program Chair for IEEE International Workshop on Machine Learning for Signal Processing (MLSP'13), Co-General Chair for the IEEE Workshop on Multimedia Systems for Surveillance (MMSS'11), Advanced Video and Signal-Based Surveillance, General Chair for the 8th International Workshop on Digital Watermarking (IWDW) held at the University of Surrey in 2009 and co-Editor for two Springer Proceedings on Digital Watermarking from IWDW08 and IWDW09. He is a Fellow of Institution of Engineering and Technology (FIET), Fellow of Institute of Physics (FInstP), Fellow of British Computer Society (FBCS) and Senior Member of IEEE.

In his spare time, Tony enjoys playing badminton, Tai Chi, skiing and learning to play the guitar.

Research Interests

Tony's research interests are in multimedia security, digital watermarking, steganalysis, image forensics, satellite remote sensing, image processing and UWB radar target detection and identification. He coordinates the research activities of the Multimedia, Security and Forensics Group  in the Department. Please refer to the group website on the individual research topics.
