Biography

Professor Anthony T.S. Ho joined the Department of Computing, Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, University of Surrey, UK in 2006. He holds a Personal Chair in Multimedia Security and is currently Head of Department of Computing since 2010. Surrey Computing was recently ranked as one of the top 150 Computer Science Departments in the World by ARWU 2012.and one of only 10 UK Universities in that band. Professor Ho also leads the Multimedia Security and Forensics research group in the Department.  He was the recipient of the prestigious Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Innovation in Engineering Award under the Security category for his research and commercialization work on digital watermarking in 2006 (slide 38).

Professor Ho obtained his BSc(Hons) in Physical Electronics from Northumbria University in 1979, his MSc in Applied Optics from Imperial College London in 1980 and his PhD in Digital Image Processing from King's College London in 1983. After graduation, he worked in industry for 11 years in the UK and Canada. His first job was at ERA Technology, first as Senior Engineer and then Principal Engineer, where he actively involved in the research and development of target detection and identification algorithms for a pioneering subsurface radar system for plastic anti-personnel and anti-tank mine clearance in the Falklands. He moved to Vancouver, Canada in 1987 and worked as a Project Leader for MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates (MDA), involved in the delivery and installation of a satellite remote sensing image processing system for application in forestry monitoring and classification . From 1994 to 2005, he was a Senior Lecturer and then Associate Professor at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. While at NTU, he co-founded DataMark Technologies (DMT) in 1998, a company specialises in digital watermarking and steganography. DMT is now a subsidiary of Singapore Technologies Engineering.

Professor Ho has published more than 130 articles in international journals and conference proceedings as well as 8 international  patents granted related to watermarking and steganography. He recently received a best paper award for a co-authored conference paper on camera model identification from IEVC 2012.  He is the Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Information Security Technical Report published by Elsevier.  He was elected and serves on a number of IEEE technical societies including as technical committee members on the IEEE Signal processing Society, Information Forensics and Security, IEEE Circuits and Systems Society, Multimedia Systems and Applications, and Visual Signal Processing and Communications.  Professor Ho was General Chair for the 8th International Workshop on Digital Watermarking (IWDW) held at the University of Surrey in 2009 and co-Editor for two Springer Proceedings on Digital Watermarking from IWDW08 and IWDW09. He is a Fellow of Institution of Engineering and Technology (FIET), Fellow of Institute of Physics (FInstP), Fellow of British Computer Society (FBCS) and Senior Member of IEEE.

In his spare time, Professor Ho enjoys playing badminton, Tai Chi, skiing and learning to play the guitar.
