Biography

Prof Jiang is in the process of establishing a Media Computing Research Laboratory. The part of his research on security is associated with the MSF Group.

Prof Jiang received B.Sc degree from Shandong Mining Institute, China, in 1982, M.Sc degree from China University of Mining and Technology in 1984, and PhD from the University of Nottingham, UK, in 1994. From 1985 to 1989, he was a lecturer at Jiangxi University of Technology, China. In 1989, he joined Loughborough University, UK, as a visiting scholar and later moved to the University of Nottingham as a research assistant. In 1992, he was appointed a lecturer of electronics at Bolton Institute, UK, and moved back to Loughborough University in 1995 as a lecturer of computer science. From 1997 to 2001, he worked as a professor of Digital Imaging & Data Compression at the School of Computing, University of Glamorgan, Wales, UK, where he established and headed a research group of digital imaging and data compression (http://imaging.comp.glam.ac.uk). In 2002, he joined the Department of Electronic Imaging & Media Communications, University of Bradford, as a Chair Professor of Digital Media, and Director of Digital Media & Systems Research Institute (http://dmsri.inf.brad.ac.uk). He is a chartered engineer, fellow of IEE, fellow of RSA, member of EPSRC College, EU FP-6/7 evaluator, EU project auditor, panel expert for both IP and NoE hearings, Norway Research Council international evaluator, and a consulting professor at Chinese Academy of Sciences and Southwest China University. He received the Outstanding Overseas Chinese Young Scholarship award (Type-B) from the Chinese National Sciences Foundation in 2000, and outstanding overseas academics award from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2004. He sits on the editorial board for Image & Vision Computing Journal, International Journal of Multimedia and Ubiquitous Computing, International Journal of Computing & Automation, and served as an associate editor for Pattern Recognition. His research interests include, image/video processing in compressed domain, digital video coding, stereo image coding, medical imaging, computer graphics, machine learning and AI applications in digital media processing, retrieval and analysis. He has published around 400 refereed research papers and invented one European patent (EP01306129) filed by British Telecom Research Lab on pixel extraction from compressed videos without decompression. This patent has also been filed by British Telecom in Canada, South Korea and the US (BT Case Ref: A30116).

Research Interests

Professor J Jiang's major research interests are computerized algorithm and system development for digital media content analysis, interaction and perception via machine learning and intelligent computational approaches. His research vision can be highlighted as: 

(i)  To enable computers to understand, interpret, and perceive digital media content like humans; 

(ii) To enable humans to produce, interact and manage digital media content via full exploitation of computing powers.

Research Collaborations

In addition to UK national research funding, Professor J Jiang has been active in European Framework Research Programmes for the past 15 years, and served the European Commission as a proposal evaluator, project auditor and panel expert member for both IP and NoE hearings.
