Among the innumerable musical commemorations of the Holocaust, those of Polish-born, Soviet-domiciled composer Mieczysław Weinberg stand out for their power and authenticity (his parents perished in the aftermath of the Nazi invasion of Warsaw). This paper will introduce two of his Jewish Songs, whose complex afterlife reveals much about the ambiguity of Soviet attitudes to the topic.
