Actigraphy

Surrey Clinical Research Centre is a world leader in actigraphy. We pioneered the use of the technique in human psychopharmacology. We were also the first centre to use actigraphs to monitor the behavioural compliance of subjects on our clinical trials, which ensures that we collect the best quality data for our clients.

We also have a wealth of experience in using actigraphy in:

  • Monitoring movement using wrist actigraphs to assess night-time, daytime and circadian activity which has been validated as a complementary tool in CNS drug research
  • Compliance in drug development
  • Differentiating the pharmacodynamics of antidepressants in both depressed patients and volunteer populations
  • Accurately measuring the time course of the daytime sedation caused by certain antihistamines and antidepressants
  • The long term monitoring of total sleep time and sleep efficiency
  • Patient clinical trials looking at the sleep/wake effects of:
    • Antidepressants
    • Allergic rhinitis
    • The sedative effect of antihistamines
    • Residual drug and hangover effects
    • Insomnia
    • Nocturia
  • Volunteer clinical trials looking at drug hangover effects, treatment for insomnia
  • Volunteer compliance - to ensure that the results of a study are not confounded by factors that occur outside the sleep centre  Actigraphy is used to confirm volunteers sleep/wake cycle, and that they are not sleep deprived, or sleep satiated, in order that the true effect of the study compound is seen
  • Academic projects in the fields of:
    • Sleep and sporting performance
    • Time zone acclimatisation of athletes
    • Antarctic and arctic exploration
    • Children and sleep
    • Hypnotherapy

Analysis service - we offer advice and an analysis service to academics wanting to include actigraphy in their studies. We can also lend our devices to groups who are interested in using actigraphy in their work.

We are equipped with the latest actigraphs from Ambulatory Monitoring Inc. and Cambridge Neurotechnology Ltd.
