Human Performance Measurement
Surrey is recognised globally as a centre of excellence in the measurement of psychological performance, cognitive function and memory. We have developed a battery of sensitive, valid and reliable tests used as international benchmarks for testing, particularly in Central Nervous System (CNS) drug development. Psychometrics specially developed and validated for use in CNS drug development programmes include:

Objective Tests -
We offer a range of objective psychometric assessments including the Critical Flicker Fusion, Continuous Tracking Time, Digit Symbol Substitution Task, Stroop Test, Short Term Memory, Choice Reaction Time and Rapid Visual Information Processing, Complex Reaction Time Task, Computerised Psychomotor Vigilance Task, Finger Sequential Tapping Task, Goal Neglect Task, Lexical Decision Task, Motor Tracking Task, Paired Associate Learning and Memory, Positive and Negative Affect Scale, Paced Visual Serial Addition Task, Spatial Memory Tasks, Sustained Attention to Response Task, Serial Reaction Task, Simple Reaction Time Task, Texture Discrimination Task, Verbal Memory Tasks, Verbal Fluency Task, Immediate Verbal recall, Memory Scanning, Bond-Lader, Profile of Mood States, Delayed recall, Delayed Recognition, Paced Visual Serial Addition, Sustained Attention Response Task, N-Back tests, Inspection time, Pursuit Tracking, Memory Scanning, Verbal Reasoning, the Psychomotor Vigilance Task and Word Recall Immediate and Delayed (WRi & WRd).
Skills -
These are tests which assess everyday skills such as car driving using our driving simulator
Subjective Rating Scales -
We use a broad range of paper-based psychometric tests including the Advanced Progressive Matrices Test (Raven) –Short Form (APM), Bayer Activities of Daily Living Scale (B-ADL), Brief Pain Inventory (BPI), Cognitive Failures Questionnaire (CFQ), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) – Short Version, Horne-Ostberg Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ), Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS), Line Analogue Rating Scale (LARS), Leeds Assessment of Neuropathic Symptoms and Signs (LANSS), Leeds Sleep Evaluation Questionnaire (LSEQ), the Milford Epworth Sleepiness Scale (MESS), Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), the National Adult Reading Test (NART), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Self-Rating Activities of Daily Living (SR-ADL), Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), The Short Form – 36 Version 2 (SF-36 v2), and the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS).
Physiological monitoring -
We can undertake a range of physiological monitoring including 24-Hour continuous EEG, actigraphy, postural stability and continuous glucose monitoring.
Clinical assessment -
e.g. the Syndrom Kurtz Test and evaluation of activities of daily living
We have also recently opened the Surrey Human Performance Institute in collaboration with the Surrey Sports Park which offer state of the art cardiopulmonary exercise tests (CPET) and other physiological assessments. CPET has several uses including the diagnosis and differentiation between cardiac or pulmonary diseases, and also in the monitoring of the response to treatment in patients with cardiopulmonary disease.
