This paper will explore the emergence of Algerian nationalism between 1918 and 1939. It will analyse how the differing strands of nationalism were shaped by the interaction with communism, Islamic movements and pan-Arab nationalism. It will examine the complex interaction with the French Socialist and Communists Parties. It will outline the role immigrants in France as well as that of social and cultural movements in Algeria. The concluding part of the paper will chart the impact of the Popular Front and its role in fashioning a distinctive nationalist political culture within Algeria.
