By focusing on the intersection of religion and civic engagement among Miami’s immigrant and minority groups, this presentation critiques the concept of social capital and develops the notion of Civic Social Capital Combining Weber and Bourdieu, the presentation examines the role of religious organizations in developing social relationships and how these relationships affect the broader civic world.  Particularly emphasized are the roles of denomination, generation, and leadership. The presentation is based upon the forthcoming book, Churches and Charity in the Immigrant City, to be published by Rutgers University Press and due out in February 2009.
