The ways in which we theorise identities is always political. The characteristics we identify with, separate ourselves from and emphasise all have implications for what we do and how we position ourselves in the world. It is in recognition of this that the large ESRC programme of work on identities was called ‘Identities and Social Action’. It is, however, also possible consciously to deploy identities, in ways that make them a resource for identity politics as well as social action.

This paper uses examples from various empirical studies to consider how intersections of gender, racialisation and social class and identity politics can be interlinked.
