Nadje Al-Ali explores political transition and social changes in post-invasion Iraq from a gendered perspective. Drawing on the historical context of Iraq under occupation, namely the 35 years of Bath regime, she explores the various ways in which gender has played a key role in contesting notions of Iraqi nationalism as well as increasing sectarianism. The talk is based on Nadje Al-Ali’s recently published Iraqi Women: Untold Stories from 1948 to the Present (2007, Zed Books) and her forthcoming publication (jointly with Nicola Pratt) What kind of Liberation? Women and the Occupation in Iraq (2009, University of California Press) http://www.ucpress.edu/books/pages/11145.php
