This paper will be contextualised by some of the recent discussions about the increasing numbers of people identifying as 'mixed' and of 'mixed' families coming under increasing scrutiny from policy makers and practitioners in a range of fields. The paper will argue that many debates revisit older ideas about miscegenation and culture clash, and increasingly, reinforce naturalised and heteronormative ideas of familial belonging.
