'Researching Global Migration: Transnational Networks and Diasporic Communities'
Steven Vertovec (BA Colorado, MA UCSB, DPhil Oxon) is Research Reader in Social Anthropology at the University of Oxford and Director of the ESRC Research Programme on Transnational Communities. Previous positions include Research Fellow at the University of Oxford School of Geography and Principal Research Fellow at the ESRC Centre for Research in Ethnic Relations, University of Warwick. Under the auspices of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Dr Vertovec has been Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Ethnology, Free University of Berlin and at the Institute for European Ethnology, Humboldt University Berlin. He is also a Co-ordinator of a UNESCO-MOST project on immigrants and ethnic minorities in European cities, a Senior Partner in a Volkswagen Foundation project on ethnic minorities and schools in Europe, and is on the Research Board of Metropolis, and International Forum of policy-makers and academics on immigration issues.
He is author of Hindu Trinidad: Religion, Ethnicity and Socio-Economic Change (Macmillan, 1992) and Divergent Diaspora: Hindus and Hinduism outside India (UCL Press, forthcoming), editor of Aspects of the South Asian Diaspora (Oxford University Press, 1991) and Migration and Social Cohesion (Edward Elgar, forthcoming), and co-editor of South Asians Overseas: Migration and Ethnicity (Cambridge University Press, 1990) The Urban Context: Ethnicity, Social Networks and Situational Analysis (Berg, 1995), Islam in Europe: The Politics of Religion and Community (Macmillan, 1997), Muslim European Youth: Re-producing Religion, Ethnicity and Culture (Ashgate, 1998) and Migration, Diasporas and Transnationalism (Edward Elgar, forthcoming). He was Assistant Editor of the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion, Reviews Editor for New Community and Editorial Advisor for the International Social Science Journal.
