The paper outlines the principles and approach of a research project that commenced 1st October 2008 funded by the ESRC 'A comparative study of the representation of 'suspect communities' in multi-ethnic Britain and of its impact on Muslim and Irish communities'. The research will investigate transformations over time in the social construction and representation of two religio-ethnic communities that have been perceived as 'suspect' and as threatening the fabric of British life. It aims to provide a new analysis of the Irish experience, compare this with Muslim experiences and establish what useful insights this may afford both Muslim communities and the policy makers who seek to implement counter-terrorism policies without alienating communities.
