Research in the Department of Computer Science

We are involved in a broad range of research areas, ranging across the Department's research groups of Secure Sysems (SS), Nature Inspired Computing and Engineering (NICE), the University-wide Surrey Centre for Cyber Security (SCCS) and Centre for Mathematical and Computational Biology (CMCB) (co-)led by the Department, and with links to the School of Arts' Digital World Research Centre (DWRC).

The Department has a strong research culture and a growing research profile, and we have won several prizes, including the University Voting Systems Competition System Design award in 2007, and the prestigious Institution of Engineering and Technology Innovation in Engineering Security award in 2006.

We have a tradition of exploitation and practical application, and we enjoy strong research links with industry. We have a vibrant and active PhD community, and regularly host research visitors and speakers. The Department runs an annual PhD conference series since 2003.

Our Reputation

Surrey has risen to 22nd place among 106 institutions for ‘Research Power’

Secure Systems (SS)

New technologies for security- and safety-critical domains, ranging from trustworthy voting systems, to formal methods integration for software systems development, and formal models for UML.

Nature Inspired Computing and Engineering (NICE)

Developing computational models and algorithms inspired from natural intelligence found in physical, chemical, social and biological systems.

Surrey Centre for Cyber Security (SCCS)

A university wide research centre led by researchers of the Department of Computer Science and involving all four research groups of the Department. Aims to promote collaboration of researchers from the whole university on different aspects of cyber security research.

Centre for Mathematical and Computational Biology (CMCB)

A interdisciplinary research centre representing the expertise of the University as a whole in mathematical modelling and computational analysis of big data in contemporary biology. The Department of Computer Science is a core part of the centre memberships and co-coordinating its management.

Digital World Research Centre (DWRC)

A multi-disciplinary research centre within the School of Arts. Aims to understand and transform communication through digital media. Has links with the Computer Science in research areas like human-computer interface, multimedia computing and information visualisation.
