About The Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing
The Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP) is one of the major research centres of the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Surrey. CVSSP was founded in 1986 by Prof Josef Kittler within Surrey's Department of Electronic Engineering. Its aim is to advance the state of the art in multimedia signal processing and computer vision, with a focus on image, video and audio applications.
CVSSP, directed by Prof Adrian Hilton, is one of the largest research centres in the UK focusing on signal processing and interpretation. It has over 120 members comprising academic and support staff, postdoctoral research fellows, visitors and PhD students. CVSSP research income is in excess of £9.5m, with about 90 percent resourced by grants from EPSRC, European Commission (EC), Technology Strategy Board (TSB) and industry.
The Centre's expertise and activities span Computer Vision, Digital Signal Processing, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, Computer Graphics and Human Computer Interaction, Medical Image Analysis and Multimedia Communication.
CVSSP is structured into six Research Labs in Machine Audition, Biometrics & Security, Cognitive Systems, Multimedia Communications, Medical Imaging and Visual Media Our research is conducted in key-themes across the Centre;

CVSSP research spans fundamental theoretical advances through to practical application. The majority of the Centre's research is conducted in collaboration with the UK or European industry. The Centre has a strong track-record of innovative research leading to technology transfer and exploitation in biometrics, creative industries, mobile communication, consumer electronics, manufacturing , surveillance and clinical applications
