Surrey's Researcher of the Year Award

Tuesday 10 July 2012

Dr Jean-Yves Guillemaut has been named University's Researcher of the Year (Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences).

Dr Guillemaut has pioneered the use of multiple camera systems in sports TV broadcast and film production through the introduction of robust 3D computer vision algorithms. His research introduced the first system for stereo 3D from monocular cameras allowing efficient and flexible production. Technologies resulting from this research have been used in TV broadcasts by the BBC, and exploited by UK industry in film post-production tools. Robust 3D video analysis techniques developed also have wider application for sports performance and biomechanical analysis.

Dr Guillemaut was also co-author with Dan Casas (CVSSP PhD student) of an award winning paper at the ACM Interactive 3D Graphics and Games Symposium 2012.

Professor Adrian Hilton, Director of CVSSP congratulated Jean-Yves on achieving this award and commented "This is the second year in a row that a CVSSP researcher receives this award with Dr Norman Poh being awarded it in 2011. This highlights the quality of the research carried out by all researchers in this Centre".

The awards were introduced by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation, Professor Stephen Williamson, who commented: “It is a great pleasure to recognise and celebrate the contributions to research at Surrey made by those who are still at an early stage of their careers and I congratulate all the worthy winners.”
