Discover the University of Surrey

We have some of the best new academic, library, sports, arts and accommodation facilities of any university in the UK, as well as one of the most envied Professional Training placement programmes in the world. This combination of prestige, expertise, resources and lifestyle is unique, and it’s all to be found here in the beautiful countryside of the Surrey Hills just half an hour from central London.

Our services and facilities are constantly being improved. We aim to create an environment which welcomes disabled and dyslexic students, enabling you to participate fully in university life.

Enterprising attitudes

Few universities can match our ability for enterprise. Whether it’s supporting our students and academics as they seek to turn their ideas into successful business propositions, working with industry to share our expertise for everyone’s benefit, or creating our own ‘spin-out’ companies to get the results of our world-class research out into the world, our naturally entrepreneurial culture has achieved success after success.

We have launderettes on all our sites, a post office, bank, bookstore, pharmacy, convenience store and health centre on the Stag Hill campus, and a café-bar on the Manor Park Campus. There is a large Tesco supermarket nearby, with global cuisine and dietary needs catered for by the Students’ Union international food shop. A weekly fruit and vegetable market is held on the Stag Hill campus too.

All campus accommodation has a residential warden service and 24-hour cover from our in-house security team, ensuring that you feel safe and secure. Student mentors are also on hand to help you settle in and keep your social diaries busy.

120 years: a history of shaping the future

We recently celebrated the 120th anniversary of our foundation.

The institution has evolved significantly in that time, but some things have remained constant. We strongly believe that we should turn the new knowledge we generate into practical innovations that improve people’s lives. We want our students and academics to make a real impact on the world, for their own benefit as well as the advances they can help to bring about.

These are the attitudes that most clearly define us, and have done so for over 120 years.

Campus environment and accessibility

Situated on the side of Stag Hill not far from Guildford’s town centre, the University campus is self contained.

All facilities are close to each other and the campus setting offers a controlled environment to live and study. Staff are easily contactable and amenities are on hand.

As the campus is on the side of a hill, ground floor levels between buildings can vary widely. Level changes in footpaths are generally stepped which can cause difficulty for students with mobility problems. However, there are routes to most places on campus using ramps.

If you have mobility difficulties, you should also contact the Faculty Fire Officer (through the Academic Faculty Office) who will discuss an evacuation plan with you. We recommend that you visit the campus in advance to ensure that we meet your needs.

Professional Training placement partners

We are extremely proud of our Professional Training placement programme.

Our prestigious placement partner organisations— which include EDF, Unilever, Sony, Sainsbury's and Microsoft — provide opportunities for students from right across the University to put their knowledge and skills into practice in a real professional environment. In return, the enthusiasm, ambition and creativity of a Surrey undergraduate enhances the organisation's workplace for up to a year.

Pre-entry days

Pre-entry days take place in mid-September and are designed to help with the transition to higher education.

Each event covers some of the key issues around studying and living at university, including how higher education differs from school or college, what is expected of you as a first-year student, and how to manage your finances.

There is the opportunity to take a tour of the campus, and Student Ambassadors are on hand to provide an insight into what life at Surrey is really like.
