About Us
The School of Economics (formerly the Department of Economics) has a reputation for research and teaching built upon a commitment to theoretical and, rigorously founded, applied work. The School enjoys a strong profile in research and teaching, exemplified by a successful 2008 RAE and recent NSS scores.
The School has a thriving student community, and houses three highly successful undergraduate degrees, four strong MSc programmes and a buoyant PhD programme. The School is a member of the South East DTC which is accredited by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). Our students contribute to the lively and stimulating international atmosphere in the School and each year we accept approximately 110 undergraduates, 70 MSc students and 5 PhD students onto our programmes. The School performs well in all the established league tables, ranked 10th out of 68 UK Economics departments according to the Times Good University Guide 2012.
The School has a strong international reputation for research in key areas of economics including Macroeconomics, Energy Economics, Industrial Organisation, Health, Labour Economics, Law and Economics and Econometrics and also enjoys a number of active multidisciplinary research opportunities. Many staff members are active as economic advisors to government and prestigious international organisations including the IMF, the European Central Bank, the Bank of England and HM Treasury.
