Competition between universities to recruit the best academics, practitioners and researchers into their fold has never been fiercer. We operate in a global market, and so it’s exciting to see that the School remains high on the wish list for many international academics. As we embark on a new academic year, we are welcoming a strong field of fresh talent to the Faculty, drawn from institutions across Europe and beyond.
After completing a PhD in Economics at the University of Minnesota in 2002, Professor Guilherme Manuel Barreto Belo Carmona joined the School of Economics of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa in Lisbon (Portugal) as an Assistant Professor. Subsequently, he moved to the Faculty of Economics at the University of Cambridge, serving as a Lecturer from 2009 until 2012. In 2009 he became a Fellow of King's College (Cambridge). Guilherme’s research interests revolve around economic and game theories, voting in large elections, dynamic risk sharing, macroeconomic policy, and financial and monetary economics. His position within the School is Professor of Economics.
Also joining the School of Economics staff is Dr Federico Martellosio, who has previously served as a teaching fellow at the University of Southampton, a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University of Amsterdam and most recently, a Lecturer in Economics at the University of Reading. His specialisms include theoretical and applied econometrics and spatial econometrics. He comes to the School of Economics as a Senior Lecturer.
Senior Lecturer Dr Esteban Jaimovich joins the University of Surrey from Collegio Carlo Alberto (Turin) where he was an Assistant Professor of Economics. Previously, he gained a BSc in Economics from the University of Buenos Aires, and an MSc and PhD in Economics from UCL. His research is founded in the area of development economics, particularly the study of poverty persistence, lack of sustained long-run growth and international trade. He comes to the School of Economics as a Senior Lecturer.
Dividing his time between Jerusalem and the UK, Professor Alex Gershkov brings expertise in the fields of microeconomic theory, information economics, mechanism design and contract theory to his role. He will share his time between the University of Surrey and The Hebrew University of Jerusalem where he is an Associate Professor. He previously worked as a Research Fellow and Junior Professor at the University of Bonn.
Also joining the Faculty as a visiting part-time Lecturer is Dr Filippo Ferroni. Filippo undertook postgraduate studies in Economics at Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona where he received a Master of Science in Economics in 2005 and PhD in Economics in 2009. Since September 2009, he has worked as an economist at the Macroeconomic Forecasting Directorate of Banque de France. He also held posts as lecturer and teaching assistant at IESEG School of Management and at SciencePo in Paris. Filippo’s research interests range from quantitative macroeconomics, to applied times series analysis and monetary economics.
Dr Antonio Mele holds both an MSc (Economics) and PhD from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. Prior to arriving in Surrey, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Economics at the University of Oxford. His research interests are primarily in the fields of macroeconomics, dynamic contracts, fiscal and monetary policy, and computational methods. Antonio joins the School of Economics as a Lecturer in Economics.
Recently arrived at Surrey from the University of Birmingham, Dr Jaideep Roy received his BSc in Economics, Mathematics and Political Science from the University of Calcutta and MA in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics, before completing a PhD at the Universidad Carlos III Madrid. He then undertook post-doctoral research at the University of Copenhagen. He has worked in many different areas including economic theory, political theory, development economics, and learning and evolution theory and experiments. Jaideep joins the School of Economics as a Reader in Economics.
