Biography

Joanne joined the department as a Senior Lecturer in January 2010 and was appointed as Reader in March 2012. She studied in Manchester before working as a Research Fellow for the Centre for Globalisation and Economic Policy at the University of Nottingham, after which she worked as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Sheffield. Joanne is a member of the European Association of Labor Economists and a regular participant at the Work and Pensions Economics Group (WPEG) seminars and conferences.

Research Interests

Joanne’s PhD thesis was entitled `A Further Analysis into the Economics of Racial Discrimination’ and was concerned with explaining ethnic employment and pay disadvantage, whilst paying particular attention to the qualifications and occupational differences between ethnic minority men and women. Previously she has published work explaining ethnic and gender disadvantage. Her current research interests include the economics of inequality, environmental economics, as well as the economics of education. She is currently researching how technical change has impacted on inequality and whether this has led to a gender bias. Joanne has been involved in policy evaluations which include those funded by the Welsh Assembly and the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.
