Heather Gage, Professor of Health Economics (Co-ordinator of HRG)
Heather Gage works as a health economist and health services researcher in a variety of applied collaborative projects. She leads health economics for the NIHR Research Design Service – South East. Since 1995, she have been involved as principal or co-investigator in over 20 multidisciplinary NHS, EU, industry and charity funded projects, resulting in over 30 peer reviewed papers. Projects have covered surgical, medical, public health, quality of life and workforce issues in hospital and community settings, and have used varied methodologies including RCT and observational. She has also conducted systematic reviews, and cost effectiveness analyses of health care technologies. She is a member of the Dementias and Neurodegenerative Diseases Research Network (DeNDRoN) Primary Care Study Group.
Neil Rickman, Professor of Economics
Neil Rickman’s work in the area of health economics is closely related to his work on regulation of legal services, and has included projects on NHS contracts, medical negligence and litigation. He had advised the Department of Health on matters relating to legal policy and medical negligence. His work has been published in the Economic Journal, Journal of Health Economics, Journal of Risk and Insurance, British Medical Journal, International Review of Law and Economics.
Joanne Evans, Lecturer in Economics
Joanne Evans brings her skills in applied microeconomics and econometrics to the analysis of health data sets. She has been involved in recent work in the HRG on regulation and quality of residential care.
Caragh Flannery, Research Fellow in Health Economics
Caragh Flannery joined the HRG in May 2012 having recently completed an MSc in Health Economics at the University of Cork. Caragh provides research support to varied projects being undertaken within the HRG.
Daniel Jackson, Research Fellow in Health Economics (Part-time)
Daniel Jackson joined the HRG in a part time capacity in March 2009. He is a graduate of the University of York’s MSc Health Economics programme. Dan has had varied experience in the pharmaceutical, medical devices and imaging sectors. He is skilled in economic modelling and health technology assessment, and has published papers in peer reviewed international journals. He has been involved in several NICE submissions. He was elected to the Royal Society of Medicine and the Royal Society of Public Health in 2005.
Clive Smee, Visiting Professor of Economics
Professor Clive Smee brings considerable experience of health policy making to the Health Research Group. He has worked as an economist on manpower planning in developing countries (for ODA), on social security issues (for DHSS) and on health issues for the Department of Health, as Chief Economic Advisor 1984 - 2002. He has particular interest in health reforms both nationally and internationally and has acted as a consultant for the governments of New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Russia and Turkey. He was the Nuffield Trust Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Fellow, 2003-4 and presented seminars and lectures to complement his book: “Speaking Truth to Power”.
Research Fellows and Postgraduate Research Students
There are currently three research fellows working on funded projects, and six post graduate students registered for MPhil/ PhD/ MD programmes in the area of health economics / services.
