Research
The School has a reputation for research and teaching built upon a commitment to theoretical and, rigorously founded, applied work. The School enjoys a strong profile in research, exemplified by a successful 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). We were ranked in the top twenty of all UK economics departments in the 2008 RAE (according to Times Higher Education).
Our research focuses on broadly defined themes including macroeconomics, energy economics, utility regulation and other topics in applied microeconomics. We actively embrace multidisciplinary research and are key members of University-based research teams in health, ethnicity/immigration, radiocommunications and the environment.
We have two research centres (Centre for International Macroeconomic Studies – CIMS, and Surrey Energy Economics Centre – SEEC), and research groupings covering multidisciplinary areas of health, radiocommunications and applied microeconomics. In addition to activity within these structures, we also believe that flexible collaborations and individual scholarship are powerful modalities for generating high quality research and these are also encouraged.
