Study

The School of Economics actively pursues the highest standards in teaching and research. Staff-student relations are excellent and the School prides itself on creating a warm and friendly environment in which all its members are able to realise their full potential. Teaching on the courses is by lectures, tutorials, seminars and workshop sessions. The purpose is to use, rather than merely to study, economics. In tutorials, you will be encouraged to present your own ideas and to develop the verbal skills that will stand you in good stead for the future. Classes and workshops are essentially practical sessions in which you will develop the ability to apply and use economics. 

Undergraduate Programmes

Undergraduate students may enrol on either a three year course or a four year course that includes Professional Training. Through the Student Exchange Scheme there is also the opportunity to spend the Second Year in one of four overseas universities.

Masters Programmes

Our MSc programmes are designed to provide a strong foundation in the core skills necessary for using economics in future careers or undertaking PhD research. They also allow opportunities to specialise in all aspects of the discipline. Importantly, they draw heavily on our research interests, thereby ensuring that they contain the latest and most relevant research techniques. All of our programmes have ESRC 1+3 recognition.

Postgraduate Research Programme

The main thrusts of research in the School relate to energy economics, international economics, macroeconomics and the economics of social issues such as health and crime. The School is a member of the South East Doctoral Training Centre which is accredited by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).
