Research
The Department has a world-class reputation for research. The data from the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), ranks Surrey both as the largest and amongst the very best in terms of quality profile. Taken together these metrics clearly rank Surrey as the best Electronic Engineering Department submitted for assessment in the RAE.
Research in the Department is carried out in four research centres with cross cutting themes:
The Advanced Technology Institute – an interdisciplinary research institute investigating materials and devices for future electronics and photonics, addressing challenges in renewable energy, healthcare and information technology, led by Professor Ravi Silva.
The Centre for Communication Systems Research – the largest academic research group in communications in Europe, specialising in mobile and network technology, with over 150 researchers, led by Professor Rahim Tafazolli.
The Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing – one of the largest and best renowned centres in Europe focused on all aspects of research in image, video and audio processing, led by Professor Josef Kittler.
Surrey Space Centre – conducts research into cost-effective satellite engineering for affordable access to space, led by Professor Sir Martin Sweeting.
The excellence of our research is recognized by the prestigious prizes we continue to receive from both industry and government bodies. Furthermore we have very strong working relationships with industry, which provide a substantial proportion of the Department’s overall research income.
