An increasing number of space structures are being built in the recent years throughout the worlds. These are used for sports stadiums, gymnasiums, aircraft hangars, airport terminals, train stations, exhibition centres, shopping malls, transmission towers, telecommunication dishes and other structures. Space structures are built in steel, aluminium, timber, concrete, polymers, glass or a combination of these materials. The Space Structures Research Centre is a part of the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Surrey. It is a research centre which was founded in May 1963 and has been highly active ever since in helping to further the ideas and promote the utilisation of space structures.
