Information for Schools
The School of English and Languages is keen to foster links with local schools in order to encourage the uptake of languages at GCSE and A level and beyond. We are happy to visit schools and talk about the importance of languages and provide information about studying languages at degree level. As well as visiting schools and giving presentations, there are currently three main areas of activity:
- Undergraduate Ambassadors scheme
- Promoting positive language uptake in schools through e-learning materials
- Updating existing learning resources for distribution to schools
Undergraduate Ambassadors Scheme
Second year students studying one of the Schools’s language degree courses have the option of taking a module which prepares them for a brief teaching experience at local schools. They will undertake preparatory work at the University followed by hands-on activities teaching in front of a class at a secondary school in conjunction with the schools’ language staff. Activities have included setting pupils the task of creating a cartoon for a competition in French (Winston Churchill School) and role-play of a telephone conversation in Spanish (Weydon School).
Promoting positive language uptake in schools through e-learning materials
As part of a two-year project, e-learning materials were developed in French, German and Spanish for use in Years 8 and 9 (ages 12-14) in three local schools. The idea was to make languages more accessible and relevant to pupils and to encourage them to take them up for GCSE study. Various exercises were completed in preparation for an interactive task linking the different schools (The Ashcombe School, King's College and St John the Baptist).
Updating existing learning resources for distribution to schools
This project re-configured existing learning resources, in particular, the well received Spanish video ¡Toma la Palabra! into DVD format for free distribution nationwide to secondary schools and colleges offering Spanish at A level. The accompanying workbook was also made available without charge.

We support the government's widening participation scheme and will do our best to support all worthy applicants.
