Are some groups of students "culturally predisposed to plagiarise"? Plagiarism in academic writing is often viewed in the context of students' cultural attitudes. In this presentation I will provide a summary of research into the role of culture in academic writing and present the key arguments put forward in this on-going debate. I suggest that plagiarism should be addressed in the context of learners' ability to write academic papers and in the context of the training students receive rather than culture. This includes a discussion of the boundaries between accepted academic practice and plagiarism.
