In October 2012 the School of English and Languages at the University of Surrey is intending to launch two new one-year Master's Programmes:

  • The MA in English Literature
  • MA in Creative Writing.

On the 14th March 2012 there will be an opportunity to find out more about these new programmes.

Professor Justin Edwards, Dr Paul Vlitos and Dr Churnjeet Mahn will be introducing the programmes: What does studying for an MA in English Literature or an MA in Creative Writing at the University of Surrey involve? How and why might you decide that either programme is the right next step for you? What opportunities might an MA in English Literature or Creative Writing open up or lead on to? How should you go about applying?

This will be an informal event, giving you the chance to ask any questions you have about either programme - or about MA programmes in general! We will also be discussing our existing MA programmes in Communication and International Marketing and in Intercultural Communication with International Business. If you are currently considering applying for an MA or if you would like to learn more about the options available, please do come along.

The event also will feature free wine and nibbles.

Some more details on the new programmes:

The MA in English Literature is designed to assist students to: hone and develop their critical skills in analyzing texts from a range of genres; locate literary texts in historical and cultural contexts, and to familiarize themselves with the history of literary production; to reflect critically and theoretically on the changing historical relationship between text and context, and to produce informed and incisive critical writing; to equip themselves with the research and writing skills they will need to produce both critically informed analyses of literary texts and engage with contemporary literary criticism. The MA programme will encourage students to develop their undergraduate study of English Literature, to develop more effective modes of criticism, and to use their deepening critical, historical and theoretical awareness to develop as critical thinkers.

The MA in Creative Writing is intended for those who wish to build their confidence and technical ability in composing creative prose and poetry while also developing a deeper and more extensive critical awareness of the cultural, literary and theoretical history of text production. It is designed to assist aspiring writers to develop and polish their writing skills in prose fiction and/or poetry; to locate their work in historical and cultural context; to equip themselves with the research and writing skills they will need to produce both critically informed prose or poetry and creative criticism; and to reflect productively on both the creative process itself and the finished work that has resulted from it.

The course’s innovative range of optional modules will offer students the chance to study, analyze and produce work in a variety of modes that other Creative Writing programmes have neglected. Optional topics which may be explored each year include: ‘Creative Non-Fiction’ (including travel writing and life writing), ‘Genres’ of fiction (from the detective novel to science fiction, and beyond), ‘Humour in Literature’ (past and present) and ‘Realism and its Critics’ (which juxtaposes self-consciously experimental and formally-innovative writing with more formally-conventional and self-proclaimedly ‘realistic’ fiction).

Please join us on March 14th 2012 if you are interested in learning more about these new one-year postgraduate programmes! Even if you have not previously considered taking an MA, this is a valuable opportunity to learn more about how such programmes work - and where an MA in English Literature or Creative Writing might take you!

If you are a level 3 student and are planning to attend it would be helpful if you could drop an e-mail to Dr Paul Vlitos (p.vlitos@surrey.ac.uk), so we have some rough idea of numbers.

If you are interested in the MAs but are unable to attend the event, you may contact Prof Justin Edwards or Dr Paul Vlitos for more information.
