The Surrey New Writers Festival is an annual public festival affiliated with the Creative Writing programme at the University of Surrey. The Festival aims to feature innovative writers, artists, and industry professionals. The dynamic and interactive programme of events will be of interest to current and potential Surrey students, and the wider community of Guildford and surrounding areas.
The inaugural Festival will take place on Friday March 15th and Saturday March 16th. Events will be held in various locations on the University of Surrey campus and in the town of Guildford. Some of the 2013 programme highlights include: artists who work with digital text and poetic performance; songwriters-in-residence; a Festival Book club; panel discussions and talks featuring publishers, writers, editors and agents; a Twitter flash mob; two exciting launch parties.
Friday’s events take place on the University of Surrey campus and include A Workshop/discussion with Chris Stevens, CEO of Atomic Antelope and designer of Alice for the iPad, a Performance and Q&A with Garrett Turner, spoken word artist and Marshall Scholar, and the Festival Launch Party, featuring readings by Surrey’s Creative Writing faculty and a performance by Festival Songwriters-in-Residence, the Unicorn Lazers.
Saturday’s events take place at Abbot’s Hospital, Guildford, and include a full day of discussion panels on poetry, publishing, humour writing, and editing; the opportunity to have lunch with author Liam Bell, and discuss his latest novel, So It Is and Agent’s Corner: Discussion and Q&A with Samantha Haywood, literary agent with and partner in the Transatlantic Literary Agency.
