Oedipus After Sophocles
Wednesday 27 February 2013
Lazarus Theatre Company
26 February – 23 March
Press Night: 28 February
A kingdom on the edge of collapse…
In the glory of a united kingdom, Oedipus stands firm, strong and triumphant; his army basking in victory. Threatened by a prophecy that could bring ruin to all he has built, the king turns his attention to seeking out the truth at all costs. In so doing, the ruin is all his.
Sophocles’ masterpiece becomes the first of the playwright’s works to be presented through Lazarus Theatre Company’s signature ensemble style, working with text, movement and music to bring classic works to wider audiences.
Following on from the success of The Women of Troy at Blue Elephant last year, Ricky Dukes will direct the first London production of Oedipus in more than four years. The grind of brutal warfare provides an apt setting for this dark and captivating epic.
"The fusion of text, dance and music evokes the original spirit of the play, which was meant to be performed with all those elements, and, at the same time, makes it accessible to modern audiences." UK Theatre Network on Lazarus’ The Women of Troy
