German Placements

German-speaking countries have a great tradition of work placements (Arbeitspraktika), and we are proud to say that students from Surrey are sought after by German employers. In recent years, the department has been offered a number of new placements, some of which by companies of international repute. Here is a selection of newly acquired and long-standing contacts:

DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst)

has offered two six-month placements to Surrey students for a number of years. The first is with the Berlin Artists-in-Residence programme, Berliner Künstlerprogramm, one of the most prestigious international programmes in the world offering grants to artists in the fields of visual arts, literature, music and film.

The second is located in the DAAD office in Bonn and provides administration for IAESTE (International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience), an organisation that finds relevant industrial placement opportunities for students of technical subjects such as Engineering, the natural sciences and forestry. Both placements give students valuable insight into the administration of international programmes in the fields of education and the arts.
More information on these programmes is available at: http://www.daad-berlin.de/de/ and

Investitionsbank Schleswig-Holstein

is a development bank that supports people, businesses and municipalities in implementing ideas within the region of Schleswig-Holstein. For 4 to 6 months, Surrey students work in the EU department/Enterprise Europe Network, which helps small and medium-sized enterprises to develop their potential and raise their awareness of EU policies. This placement is ideal for students interested in EU affairs and international projects. For further information on IB, please go to http://www.ib-sh.de

Ernst & Young

is one of the world's leading professional services organisations, and helps companies across the globe to identify and capitalise on business opportunities. They offer a six-month internship in their translation department based in Stuttgart. This is a great placement for students interested in translation/business, or any student who values work experience in a well-known company and a handsome pay.

Study Placements

The university originally consisted of four faculties: Theology, Law, Medicine, and Philosophy. In August 1716, the study of modern Languages was introduced to the curriculum. Today, the university is divided into 11 faculties, and offers a variety of degree programmes in more than 60 fields to the over 22,000 students, including 17% international students.

University of Heidelberg

Set in the midst of hills, with a picturesque old town, castle and river, Heidelberg is considered one of the most beautiful German cities and it was included in the preliminary German list for registration as a UNESCO world heritage site.

Today the University has about 27,000 students, including about 5,600 international students, and is regarded as an important centre of modern research and study in Germany. Its twelve faculties offer a wide spectrum of subjects in the arts and sciences, including medicine.

From a current student on placement;

I work in the bank’s European department with six other ladies and we focus on EU funding opportunities. We advice small and medium enterprises from the region as to how they can access this funding, as well as guiding them through the application process.

I have done lots of translation work (into both English and German) covering a large range of topics including wind power, renewable energy sources, Morocco, the Baltic Sea region, as well as a speech for the Managing Director! I have also helped organise information events and workshops, written minutes at different meetings, proof read English documents and helped maintain our website. I have travelled all over the region to attend different trade fairs and events, from Hamburg to Lübeck, from Neumünster to Rostock. All in all it is fair to say that I have been kept on my toes!

Outside of work, I sing in a French-German choir (we have two Christmas concerts coming up) and I have taken some extra Spanish lessons, just to keep my hand in. I’ve been to the theatre and opera a few times and I’m looking forward to going ice skating this weekend. I live in a lovely flat with five other people and we all get along really well. I know I will be very sad to leave Kiel and I will definitely miss all my new friends but I guess it is almost time to start getting ready for my next adventure in Pamplona…..
