TRANS: Transnationalism, Translation and Travel in Literary and Cultural Studies

TRANS is a bi-lateral research project (Surrey-USP) that will establish and enhance international research in Arts and Humanities across the two universities. TRANS examines literary, linguistic and cultural movements relating to the phenomena of travel, translation, migration, mobility and diaspora through an interdisciplinary lens drawn from expertise in literary and cultural studies, languages and translation. The work of TRANS will be comparative, qualitative, theoretical and historically driven as well as providing cultural insights on pertinent issues in the world today. This research on transnationalism will be unique in that it will unite internationally recognised researchers from across the two universities. The main participants are Professor Justin D Edwards (Surrey), Prof. Sandra Vasconcelos (USP), Dr. Ana Claudia Suriani da Silva (Surrey), Prof. John Milton (USP), Prof. Margaret Rogers (Surrey) and Prof. Laura P Zuntini de Izarra (USP).
Transnationalism in literary and cultural studies is a vital tool for unravelling the profound yet still unexplored implications that derive from the vast movement of people, texts, languages and translations across the world. Such movements have important precedents in literary and cultural studies because transnationalism highlights the flows, counterflows and the multistranded connections between the textual and cultural movements across and between borders, boundaries, regions, nations, countries and continents. In this, transnationalism does not only encompass the movement of people; it also has a profound impact on ideas of cultural exchange, citizenship, multinational literature, linguistic and cultural translations, and the transnational impacts in the cultural industries. TRANS will provide a rich research environment with scholars working in the areas of postcolonialism, travel writing, cultural geography, comparative and world literatures, transnational cultural histories and cultural studies within the arts and humanities. Research activities include the sponsoring of lectures, workshops, colloquia and conferences, as well as a research seminar series. TRANS is a UGNP research collaboration that unites three researchers from the University of Surrey and three researchers from USP. Focusing on transnational cultural mobilities from the 19th-century to the present, researchers at the three universities are engaged in research collaborations in the following areas: 1) Transnational Literary Studies: Traveling Texts; 2) Translation Studies: Linguistic and Cultural Exchanges; 3) In Transit: Travel Writing, Diaspora, Postcolonialism.
