Biography

After I graduated from the University of Algiers in 2003 in simultaneous interpreting, I undertook a Magister in technical translation at the same university from 2003-2007. My work was about terminological research in the translation of oil drilling texts from French and English into Arabic. I have been a free lance translator/interpreter since I graduated in 2003. I deal with technical translation in several fields mainly energy, engineering, environment and commerce. More recently, I tried my hand at subtitling translation and it turns out to be a very exciting experience!

Research Interests

My Magister raised much more questions that it answered. That was my first motivation to dig deeper into one of the subjects I am passionate about which is metaphor in non literary texts. I embarked on this PhD project in 2009 after I met Prof. Rogers during a visit to the University of Surrey; she showed lot of interest in my subject and encouraged me to submit a proposal. Pr. Rogers supervises my work along with Dr. Braun. I am researching how metaphors are translated from English into Arabic in popular science articles about astronomy and astrophysics in order to find out about possible influence of translation in the development of popular science articles genre in Arabic. To do so, I compiled a parallel specialised corpus composed of articles from the American popular science magazine Scientific American   and their translations into Arabic published in Majallat Al Oloom.  I am researching metaphors within the framework of cognitive and discourse dynamics approaches as well as corpus linguistics.

Affiliations

I am member of the Researching and Applying Metaphor Association (RAaM), the European Society of Translation (EST) and the International Association for Translation an Intercultural Studies (IATIS).
