Biography

Hilary holds a CNAA degree from Wimbledon School of Art (Fine Art Painting) and from the Courtauld Institute of Art (History of Art) where she has also taught postgraduate students. She is former Assistant Curator of the Watts Gallery in Compton near Guildford.

Research Interests

Her research interests are in Victorian and early twentieth century British art. Current topics include: aspects of Pre-Raphaelitism and Aestheticism; institutional issues, particularly the public art exhibition in the period; the image of Surrey; and the development of artistic identity.

"Watts and Symbolist Art in the Nineteenth Century" and catalogued entries in Gould, V.F. (ed) (2004), The Vision of G.F. Watts OM, RA (1817-1904) the catalogue of the Centenary Exhibition at the Watts Gallery.

Teaching

Hilary teaches mainly on levels 1 and 3 of the BA Humanities degree programme. She is Programme Director for the level 1 certificate programme.
