Biography
Sara completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Genoa, obtaining a BA in Translation and Interpreting in 2009. After her graduation she spent nearly a year working as a freelance translator and interpreter in Italy, during which she decided to continue her studies applying for the MA in Translation at the University of Surrey in 2010. Her research interests developed during her undergraduate and postgraduate studies, as well as during her freelance work. In May 2011, during the course of her postgraduate studies, she applied to be a PGR student under the supervision of Dr Sabine Braun and Prof Margaret Rogers.
Research Interests
The aim of Sara's research project is to combine pragmatic and semiotic theories for the development of a theoretical framework able to explain the production and interpretation of meaning in multimodal texts. Such a framework would provide translators with practical tools to help them in their decision-making process by inducing higher awareness of the underlying mechanisms of language. At the moment, research on multimodality tends to be highly fragmented in that it is mostly concerned with single theoretical items rather than with the larger picture. Pragmatics and semiotics appear to offer a good point of view from which to look at this problem and, hopefully, contribute to its solution.
