Academic Listening
The aim of this course is to help you if you have difficulty understanding spoken English. It focuses particularly on the skills needed for understanding and taking notes in lectures and seminars.
Academic Reading and Note Taking
This course will help you to read academic texts more efficiently and effectively. It will also help you take concise notes. A ULearn module provides links to further practice activities.
Academic Vocabulary
This course will raise your awareness of the words that are most commonly used in academic texts and provide your with practice in using them, both in your academic reading and writing (4 week course).
Avoiding Plagiarism
This course will provide you with the key skills required to ensure that your academic assignments are plagiarism-free. It will focus on referencing techniques and how to apply them (4 week course).
Academic Writing for MBA students
This course takes place in Semester 1 and covers all the major skills and approaches involved in written assignments for MBA Management students.
Academic Writing for Management MSc students
This course takes place in Semester 1 and covers all the major skills and approaches involved in written assignments for MSc Management students.
Assignment Writing
This course covers all the major skills involved in writing assignments, including interpreting the task; academic style; referencing and paragraphing.
NB You may qualify for an individual tutorial on this course, but only if you have attended regularly.
Critical Thinking
This course will help you to develop thinking skills by asking questions, using deductive and inductive reasoning, problem solving and creative thinking.
Dissertation Writing
This course is designed to help you if you are preparing to write a dissertation or thesis; we will cover writing, study and research skills. You will qualify for individual tutorials if you attend regularly.
If you attend all 9 classes in a Dissertation Writing course, you may qualify for Dissertation marking support.
Dissertation Writing for MBA Students
This course takes place in Semester 2. It covers the research, study and writing skills you will need to complete your dissertation successfully.
Dissertation Writing for Management MSc Students
This course takes place in Semester 2. It covers the research, study and writing skills you will need to complete your dissertation successfully.
English for Computing MSc Students
This course helps MSc students of Computing to produce effective technical reports. It provides guidance on structure and what to include in each section. It also helps you to write in an impersonal style.
English for Economics Postgraduates
This course covers all the major skills and approaches involved in written assignments for Economics postgraduates on taught courses.
English for Economics Undergraduates
This course covers all the major skills and approaches involved in written assignments for Economics undergraduates.
English for Science and Electronics (1st year FEPS UG students only)
To help Physicists, Mathematicians and Engineers to produce effective technical reports. This course provides guidance on structure and what to include in each section. It also helps you to write in an impersonal style.
Assignment Writing for Native English Speakers
This course covers the main skills necessary for effective essay writing and addresses key problems in academic writing for Native English speakers.
NB You may qualify for an individual tutorial on this course, but only if you have attended regularly.
This course provides explanations and practice in areas of grammar that cause the most difficulty for students. A ULearn module provides links to further practice activities.
Legal English
This course is for students who need to understand aspects of English law and legal procedures, and aims to develop reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in legal contexts. It is particularly useful for students studying Law, Criminology, Translation Studies, and Business Management, but may be of interest to others.
Oral Skills
This course will help you with the kind of oral skills you need for academic study, including participating in discussions, tutorials, seminars and social situations (see also Pronunciation and Presentation Skills).
Presentation Skills
This course will help you prepare to give academic presentations. It covers the different stages of a presentation, visual aids, body language and handling questions and answers. All students will have the opportunity to practise their presentation skills (see also Oral Skills).
Pronunciation
Working with a tutor and language laboratory resources, this course will help you with your particular pronunciation difficulties. You will practise sounds stress and intonation, which will help you to be understood and to understand others more easily (see also Oral Skills). Available as 9 and 6 week courses.
Technical Report Writing for Electronic Engineering MSc Students
This course helps MSc students of Electronic Engineering to produce effective technical reports. It provides guidance on structure and what to include in each section. It also helps you to write in an impersonal style.
Technical Writing
This course is particularly relevant to scientists and engineers. It provides guidelines for effective writing, concentrating on different aspects of technical reports and other forms of technical writing.
NB You may qualify for an individual tutorial on this course but only if you attend regularly.

Dates of Classes in Semester 2
Monday 4th February - Friday 3rd May
Each of the programmes includes:
Weekly Handouts: Only attendees receive handouts. You must attend classes as you learn through doing the exercises in the session with a tutor to guide you, and notes alone cannot do this for you.
Student Report: At the end of each semester we will provide a student report for you to download. This will include a description of the work you have undertaken, an attendance record, and an indication of your progress.
One-to-One help
Some time is available for individual tutorials on the Assignment Writing, Technical Writing and Dissertation/Thesis Writing programmes, where you can bring your own work to discuss with a tutor. We regret that tutorials are available only to students who attend these programmes on a regular basis.
