Pre-sessional 10 (PS10) 10 Weeks
Entry level guide – IELTS 0.5 below your offer
If you have achieved an overall IELTS score 0.5 below the required level for your degree programme and each skill is no lower than 0.5 below the individual component score for your programme, the University of Surrey will accept successful completion of this ten-week pre-sessional course as a condition of entry without the need to take another IELTS test.
This is a rigorous academic English preparation course designed to take students up to the level of English ability and skill required at Surrey. There are classes in different types of academic assignments, a range of reading and listening activities, speaking practice including an end of course student conference and a mix of continuous and final exam assessment. Students have access to all university facilities and receive strong support from expert staff including individual tutorials and constructive feedback. IELTS classes are offered to those students who need to retake the exam.
On successful completion of PS10, students will have developed their:
• ability to write in an appropriate academic style
• research and referencing skills, including adopting a critical approach to data
• lecture listening and note-taking skills
• speaking and academic presentation skills
• reading efficiency
• academic vocabulary
• ability to work independently and in groups
• confidence in their own ability to study
in English
• strategies to deal with the demands of a degree course in English.
