What Level am I?

How do I decide which level I am?

The Department of Languages and Translation Studies staff are highly experienced in advising learners about levels. You can speak to one of our tutors on the telephone, or at one of the Open Evenings.

Beginners
For those with no previous knowledge of the language.

Start Again (French only)
For those who have learnt some French in the past and who feel they need to start again from scratch.

Pre-Intermediate
For those with a basic level, who may have completed a beginners’ course or spent some time in the country.

Intermediate
For those with O level, GCSE or equivalent, not necessarily recent.

Upper Intermediate Spoken (French only)
For those who have an upper intermediate level in French and
wish to practise their conversational skills.

Advanced
For those who have gone well beyond O level, GCSE or equivalent, but who have not reached A level standard, or those who have completed an Intermediate course.

Advanced 2 (French only)
For those with A level or equivalent, or who have spent a substantial amount of time living or working in the country.

Post-Beginners Spoken 
For those who have completed the beginners course and wish to practise their conversational skills.

Pre-Intermediate Spoken (Mandarin Chinese only)
For those who have completed the Chinese Pre-Intermediate course and wish to practise their conversational skills.

Intermediate Spoken Language
For those who have an intermediate level in the language and wish to practise their conversational skills.

Advanced Spoken Language
For those who have an advanced level and who wish to practise their conversational skills.
