Preparation Courses
Course Objectives
These courses are designed to prepare students for the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) examination.
IELTS test structure
The IELTS exam has 4 components - Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. Students are given a grade for each component - leading to an overall band. An IELTS band is required to gain entry into many Undergraduate or Postgraduate degree courses in the UK, Australia, and increasingly in the USA. It is also frequently required to work within the medical profession.
Course offered
Part-time evening course
The Modular Evening course is split into 3 self-contained modules. You can take one, two or all three modules. Each module consists of:
- 3 hours per week for 4 weeks (total 12 hours)
- self-access study
Classes run from 1745hrs to 2045hrs on a Wednesday.
Course content
The courses focus on the four skills areas tested in the exam. The courses combine the following:
- exam familiarisation
- skills development (e.g. increasing reading speed, planning an essay)
- academic vocabulary development
- exam strategy
- self-access/individual study
- practice test
Self-access study
The courses include a self-access component of at least two hours per week (this is in addition to your taught course). The materials are located in The Language Resource Centre at the University of Surrey. You can use the facilities at any time during their opening hours which are:
- 10am - 9pm Monday to Friday and 10am - 4pm on Saturdays during university semesters
- 10am - 7pm in the summer (June to August)
- 10am - 5pm over the Christmas and Easter vacation.
