Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I apply for University of Surrey accommodation?
We are generally able to offer accommodation to students staying for the full year. We do our best to allocate accommodation to Semester 2 students, but it is not guaranteed and you may need to find accommodation in the private sector.
We are generally unable to allocate accommodation to students coming for Semester 1 only. If you are coming for Semester 1 only, you will need to find accommodation in the private sector.
For more information, please visit accommodation website.
- How do I find accommodation in the private sector?
The accommodation office can help you find accommodation in the private sector.
- How do I get to the University?
Click here for directions to the University.
The International Student Office run a 'meet and greet' service at the start of the academic year in September. More details of this will be available nearer the time.
- What are the semester dates?
- I want to study in the School of Management. How do I apply?
If you are coming through the Erasmus programme, you follow the standard application procedure. If you are coming from one of the School of Management international exchange partners there is a different application form. For more information, contact Deborah Edwards.
- What about students from university-wide agreements studying in management?
If you are coming from a University-wide partner, you need to follow the standard application procedure. If you are not sure which application procedure you should follow, please email studentexchange.iro@surrey.ac.uk for assistance.
- What modules can I take?
You should select modules from one course and one study level only, as this will prevent timetable clashes. See the module catalogue.
Many modules are year-long. If you are planning to come for one semester only, you should contact your Exchange Coordinator to see what options are available to you. Some departments may only be able to offer year-long exchanges.
Some departments have published a list of the modules available to exchange students:
Electronic Engineering- How many credits should I take?
You will need to check with your home University how many credits you need to take during your time at Surrey. Students are expected to follow a full-time study programme.
Typically, a semester at Surrey is 30 ECTS credits (60 Surrey credits), and a full year is 60 ECTS credits (120 Surrey credits). You need to bear in mind that Surrey credits are twice the value of ECTS credits, so ensure you check the amount for each module – this is specified in the module catalogue.
- Who is my departmental Erasmus or International Exchanges coordinator?
- Please click on the link to download the list. Exchange Coordinators (65.33KB - Requires Adobe Reader) If you need to contact your coordinator and there is no-one listed for the department you will be studying in, please email studentexchange.iro@surrey.ac.uk.
- What are the English language requirements?
Students are expected to have a command of the English language suitable for their level of study. The minimum level of competence required from non-native speakers or students who have not been educated in English is:
• International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (Band 6); or
• Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL score 550 in paper-based test, 213 in computer-based test)- Will my level of English be tested?
You will sit a short language test in the first week of the semester. This is designed to identify any language support that might be needed, and allows students with a good command of English to decide if there are advanced courses that they might choose to follow whist they have access to native speakers.
- Do you offer any English language support?
Yes. The Department of Language and Translation Studies offers an English Language Support Programme to students at the University of Surrey. These programmes are free to most students. For more information and a complete list of courses offered, please click here.
- Once I complete my studies at Surrey, when will I get my transcript?
We will send out your transcript when your marks have been confirmed and put on the computer system by your department. As your marks have to go through a Board of Examiners, it can take a while for your transcript to be sent.
The Board of Examiners may not take place until the summer in some departments. If you are here for Semester 1 only and have a deadline by which you need your transcript you should inform your Erasmus coordinator and the International Relations Office.
We generally send two copies to your home University, with the understanding that they give one copy to you. However if you would like your copy sent directly to your home address, please let the International Relations Office know and provide the home address to which you would like it sent.
- Do I have to pay fees?
If your University has an exchange agreement with us, you will not have to pay fees to study here. To find out if your University has an agreement with us, click here.
If your University does not have an agreement with us, you may be able to come here as a fee paying ‘occasional’ student for one semester or a year.
- I want to go on an exchange with the University of Surrey, but my University does not have an agreement with Surrey. Can you set one up?
Partnerships are established where a relationship can be developed and sustained over time and so are not set up for individual students.
You may be able to come as a fee-paying occasional student.
- How do I apply to come as an occasional student?
If you are interested in coming as a fee paying occasional student, you should contact the admissions team of the department you wish to study in, and ask them if they would consider taking you as an occasional student.
If you are unable to find the contact details for the appropriate admissions team, email studentexchange.iro@surrey.ac.uk and we will assist you with this.
