How do I apply?

Instructions for Applying for a Study Abroad/Erasmus place at one of Surrey’s partners 2013/14
How to Apply?
1. Before completing the form, please discuss your plans with your Erasmus/Exchange Coordinator. This person will need to sign the form. You have three choices – please list these in order of priority. They can be a mixture of university-wide and Erasmus partners.
2. Please note if you are a Faculty of Business, Economics and Law student, the application procedure is slightly different; please see here for further information.
3. Speak to your Departmental/School Erasmus/Exchange Coordinator, in the first instance. A list of Coordinators can be found here. Inform them that you are interested in going on an exchange. Check you are able to go as part of your degree, and make sure your department is willing to support your application.
4. Use this map to link to the Universities you hope to study at. Visit their website and check the module descriptions for your proposed programme. Surrey has reciprocal study exchange arrangements with institutions across Europe and the rest of the world. You will pay no fees to your chosen institution, but will continue to pay the appropriate tuition fees to Surrey. All Erasmus agreements are subject specific and your subject must be listed in order for you to be eligible to study at the partner.
5. You will need to get approval from your Departmental/School Erasmus/Exchange Coordinator that the programme of study you plan to undertake abroad is suitable.
6. If you are uncertain about any aspect of the application process visit the International Relations Office (IRO) to discuss your application. You will be able to ask any questions you have, and find out about the next stages of the application procedure.
7. Discuss your plans with your parents, in particular the financial implications, as you need to be sure you can afford to study abroad before applying. Details about financial support were provided to you in the Talk on Budgeting for your study period in December, and are available in Surrey Learn. Please ask your Coordinator if you cannot locate it.
8. Fill out Surrey's exchange/Erasmus application form and complete the budget form, by clicking on the individual links. Please hand both forms in by Thursday 31 January 2013 as indicated on the form.
What happens next?
9. We aim to have a firm list of candidates for each university by mid-February. If there are more suitable candidates than places for individual universities we will operate a selection process and a reserve list. You will then have to accept your place within a given time frame. Once you have accepted your place the IRO will nominate the selected students to the partner universities.
10. Once you have been nominated you will then need to apply to the partner University. The IRO and your department will give you instructions on how to do this. This will vary depending on the partner university as will the timeline. You may need to write a personal statement, provide evidence of financial support (for international exchange) and provide an interim transcript. You get this from your Department/School. You may be asked to provide a reference from your Personal Tutor so make sure you discuss your plans with them.
11. If you are going on an Erasmus exchange you are eligible for an Erasmus grant. The IRO will provide you with further details once you have been accepted by the partner university. International students are also eligible for Erasmus support but will need to apply for a visa.
12. If you are going on an International exchange you are likely to have to apply for a visa.
13. Since visa applications take time; it is advisable to apply early. Again further details will be provided once you have been accepted by the partner.
FHMS students planning to do a research project:
