I have always tried to make my life interesting, and what could be more interesting than going to a completely different country for a whole year?
Singapore is so different to England. Although it’s a former British colony and you can still see some elements of its British heritage remaining (English language, driving on the left), there are so many differences that in no way will your life be boring. From the year-round summer and mastering chopsticks, to the spicy food and huge Nayang campus, Singapore is definitely going to inspire you!
Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is a huge contrast to our compact and cosy University of Surrey. The campus is at least four times bigger, and even if you live in University accommodation you will probably need to take a shuttle bus to get to your lectures. All the facilities are at the highest level, and students are really cared for all of the time. The University halls are top quality and a decent size. The campus has everything you might need.

If you are an active person there are loads of different societies, clubs and sports teams you can join. I joined the University Dragon Boat team, which was one of the best in the country!
You might think that your studies whilst on exchange will be easier, but you are definitely wrong. Study level in Singapore is really high, so be ready to work hard as well as party. Lecturers are very experienced, and lessons were always interesting. If you have any difficulties, don’t hesitate to ask the local students for help; they always will. I learnt a lot from Singaporean students. The average NTU student will study really hard, plus they’ll join a few societies, and then they’ll do some sports, and after that they’ll dance all night!
A big advantage of going on exchange to Singapore is travelling. All South-East Asian countries are less than a two hour flight away, and if you book in advance flights are very cheap. While travelling you can see some spectacular places, taste many different dishes, and do heaps of things you’ve never done before, like hugging a sleeping tiger, eating cooked spider, or drinking fresh coconut milk right out of the coconut.
This opportunity the University of Surrey offers you is probably the only one you will ever have. The experience you get on an exchange is priceless. Adventures, loads of fun, the best teaching quality, and lots of new friends are all part of the package. Your memories will stay in your head forever, and you will not regret doing this.
