UK Funders may allow international co-investigators on grants for example:
- AHRC: Research Grants
- ESRC: Most funding schemes except Fellowships (and unless specifically excluded)
- British Academy: Small Grants
International Networks
Grants are also available to set up international networks focussing on a specific research area
International Travel and Visits
Funders may provide grants for travel to enable bids to be put together or to carry out research abroad
- Leverhulme Trust: International Academic Fellowships
- EU - Tempus (Individual Mobility Grants)
- German Academic Exchange Service (Study visits for academics)
Funding for visitors to the UK
These fund study visits for academics from abroad
- Leverhulme Trust: Visiting Professorships
- Leverhulme Trust: Visiting Fellowships
- Newton International Fellowships
International Placement Schemes
Placement schemes are short term fellowships at overseas research institutions and are aimed at Early Career Researchers
Bilateral country specific schemes
Some funding bodies in the UK have specific agreements with overseas institutions to fund collaborative work
Other schemes are funded directly by the UK government or by the EU
- UKIERI established to encourage collaboration between the UK and India

There are various schemes which require participation from a number of countries around the world for example:
Internal Surrey Grants
The University has a number of funds to support its international strategy
- The UGPN Research Collaboration Fund
- The FAPESP-Surrey Cooperation Agreement
- Santander Staff Mobility Awards
- Santander Postgraduate Research Awards
The FAHS Faculty Research Support Fund can also be used to facilitate collaboration.
There are many funding schemes that can be used to facilitate international collaboration.
