International Language Resources

The Faculty is home to the university’s language and cultural resources, and these support international work throughout the university as well as offering important learning opportunities to both home and visiting or exchange staff and students. The School of English and Languages offers general English language courses as well as English for academic purposes. They are also an IELTS test centre responsible for running test sessions on a monthly basis as well as IELTS preparation courses. They also offer undergraduate language degree courses in French, German Spanish, and English for International Communication and have a wide range of online resources in up to 19 languages in the Language Study Area of the Library.

The School also runs the Language and Cultural Exchange Programme (LACES) programme for both staff and students, where participants are matched with a language partner who speaks the language they want to learn or improve. In return they can help their partner practise the participant’s first language.

LACES

The School also has expertise in teaching culturally diverse classes and in cultural awareness, and houses the Global Graduate Award in Languages, which offers all students the opportunity to study a foreign language from a range of 10 languages on offer. Modules are free of charge and may be taken by any student, whatever their main subject. Undergraduate students are awarded 15 co-curricular credits for GGA language modules.
