Learning and Teaching
Universities are sometimes referred to as 'ivory towers' and can be seen as separate from the real world. In the Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences we actively encourage our students to constantly explore and consider the real world implications and applications of the subjects they are studying. The Arts and Human Sciences, as much as the Sciences, are very central to the way we live and the world we aim to build, and often interlock with the latter in creative ways for the sake of knowledge advancement, our well being, that of other people and the wider environment.
For example, in Psychology research is applied in a number of contexts, such as health care, prisons, the work place and education, from which new research innovations emerge.
Similarly, in the Arts we develop capabilities in creative production, performance, facilitation and work across a range of settings in today’s cultural industry.
In all disciplines, we aim to offer the kind of education that will allow you to be fully part of a world in which enquiring and pro-active minds are increasingly sought after and valued, particularly in professional environments.
Our teaching and supervisory activities aim at forming learners who are:
- Rigorous, autonomous and responsible thinkers, and professionals
- Open-minded and committed citizens
- Engaged with the world in pro-active and ethical ways.
We subscribe to a range of teaching that is:
- Investigative in that we prompt you to look for answers and new questions at the same time, as new knowledge is always discoverable and certainties are rare in the academic world
- Active and teacher-supported in that we put you, as a human being, student and future professional, at the centre of learning, through the careful guidance of our academics and other professionals
- Based on principles of critique in that do we not take notions for granted but challenge them from disciplinary, interdisciplinary and ethical standpoints
- Life-long in that we foster a lasting desire to learn throughout your life and progress from your BA to doctoral level, should you wish to do so and are successful in your studies
- Fully connected with the needs of your future professional life.
We shall provide you with all the necessary support you require throughout your time with us in return for your vigorous engagement with learning, the disciplines, the academics and your peer-students.
We look forward to working with you.
