Institute of Advanced Studies

Seminar Grants

Deadline: Annual - usually October

The Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS) is once again running a competition for grants worth£5,000 each to support the organisation of small-scale research meetings at Surrey.

Bids are evaluated on the following main criteria:

  • the nature of the topic (should be novel and inter-disciplinary)
  • the likelihood of attracting international scholars
  • the linkage to researchers at the University of Surrey
  • the likelihood of attracting co-funding from other sources

The competition is open to all University of Surrey academic and research staff.
The University's Distinguished Professors, who form the Advisory Board for the IAS, will evaluate the bids. Professor Nigel Gilbert is leading the development of the IAS and can be consulted about making bids.

Faculty Research Support Fund (FRSF)

Travel Grants and Pump-Priming

(FAHS Only)

The FRSF will operate on a matching basis like the URSF (now discontinued). However, the FRSF differs from the URSF in some respects. 'Overseas Conference Awards' and 'Travel Grants' have been merged into one scheme, 'Travel Grants'. Individuals can be awarded a maximum of £1k in a given year for Travel Grants. The second award type is Pump-priming Grants. Sums of up to £6k are available from the FRSF for Pump-priming (i.e. a total maximum of £12k with matching). All staff on standard academic contracts are eligible to apply. Research contract staff and academic-related staff are not eligible. Matching will be applied on a strict 50/50 basis.

Travel Grants are intended to support either conference attendance where presenting a paper, or preparing a specific grant bid (e.g. a bid to an EU framework programme).

Pump-priming Grants are intended to support newly appointed staff as an early entry into research funding, or novel initiatives from established staff where external sources are inappropriate due to, e.g., the speculative nature of the research. Such projects might take the form of pilot testing or proof of concept, prior to submitting a bid for external funding.
Deadlines for application will be quarterly, in January, April, July and October.

Only one Pump-priming application is permitted in a given financial year. Recipients of Travel Grants may submit more than one application within the same category providing the total sum requested does not exceed a £1k cost to the Fund during the financial year.
