Grants for the Arts

Grants for the arts are for individuals, arts organisations and other people who use the arts in their work. They are for activities carried out over a set period and which engage people in England in arts activities, and help artists and arts organisations in England carry out their work. Grants for the arts is funded by the National Lottery.

 

 

Earthwatch Institute

Cultural Heritage

Earthwatch's proposal review processes are guided by their mission to engage people worldwide in scientific field research and education to promote the understanding and action necessary for a sustainable environment.

Applicants are asked to submit a Concept Note (no deadline).  The Concept Note will be reviewed based on its scientific merit, appropriateness of volunteer activities, and Earthwatch’s available support for the project. If your Concept Note raises interest, you will then be invited to submit a Research Proposal.

 

 

European Cultural Foundation

Awards

The ECF supports research, cooperation, networking and the exchange of experiences through innovation and good practice. Their programmes support individuals working in the cultural field including artists, cultural practitioners, journalists, curators, arts managers.

The ECF provides a number of different awards and grants to individuals and to Arts organisations

 

NESTA

Research

NESTA, The National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts, aims to pioneer ways of supporting and promoting talent, innovation and creativity in science, technology and the arts. They invest in a diverse range of people, including scientists, engineers, medical practitioners, educators, artists, writers, film-makers and musicians.

NESTA believes that by harnessing original and innovative ideas, the UK's economy can gain a greater competitive edge. But, as an investor, NESTA is not only commercial but also creative in its focus. For them, the cultural and social benefits of a project can be just as important as the financial.

Calls are for specific areas of research

 

Esmee Fairbairn Foundation 

Arts

The Foundation supports research only when they consider it has a practical application.  The Arts is one of the topic areas covered by the Main Fund.

Applications have to be made by a charity or not-for-profit organisation.

 

 

MEDIA PLUS

Overview

Equipped with a budget of 400 million euro MEDIA brings support both before and after production. MEDIA co-finances training initiatives for audiovisual industry professionals, the development of production projects (feature films, television drama, documentaries, animation and new media), as well as the distribution and promotion of European audiovisual works

 

 

Royal Historical Society

Funding for small specialised historical conferences

Deadline: various dates throughout the year

These grants are made to conference organizers (of any status) to assist in the financing of small, specialized historical conferences where there is substantial involvement of junior (i.e. postgraduate and immediate postdoctoral) researchers. Awards are provided for conference organisers to subsidise registration fees and travel costs for junior researchers.

Training and conference bursaries

Deadline: various dates throughout the year

These grants are intended to contribute towards travel costs to assist postgraduate students in attending short-term training courses designed to widen and/or enhance skills in historical research, or in attending conferences relevant to a student's research, where the applicant has been asked to give a paper or presentation. Application may also be made for a contribution towards registration fees where these do not include subsistence or accommodation costs.

The society will also consider applications from individuals who have completed doctoral dissertations within the last two years and who are not in full-time employment. Preference will be given to members of the society.

Awards normally range from £75 to £500 with an average of £250

 

Society for Theatre Research (STR)

Research Fund

Annual Deadline: 1 February 

The Society for Theatre Research (STR) has established its own research fund. The capital includes bequests from the estates of Stephen Joseph, Anthony Denning and Kathleen Barker.

Awards may be made annually of sums ranging from £100 to £2,000

Private scholars, theatre professionals, academic staff, and students, of any nationality, are welcome to apply for grants.

Research which is substantially concerned with the history and practice of the British theatre is funded. Areas considered include the completion of work in progress; professional training in research techniques to assist established projects; a subvention towards the publication of completed work in which a publisher is already seriously interested.

 

 

Institute of Historical Research (IHR)

Scouloudi historical awards

Annual Deadline: 1 March

These awards are intended to

  • serve as a subsidy towards the cost of publishing a scholarly book or article, or an issue of a learned journal in the field of history or
  • to pay for research, and other expenses, to be incurred in the completion of advanced historical work, which the applicant intends subsequently to publish. This does not included expenses incurred in the preparation of a thesis for a higher degree.

Awards are not available to those registered for undergraduate or postgraduate courses or degrees.

 

 

Wellcome Trust

Arts Awards

The Wellcome Trust believes the arts are an effective way of stimulating debate and engaging people with biomedical science. Visual art, music, moving image, creative writing and performance can reach new audiences which may not traditionally be interested in science and provide new ways of thinking about the social, cultural and ethical issues around contemporary science. Collaborative and interdisciplinary practice across the arts and sciences can help to provide new perspectives on both fields. The arts can also provide imaginative ways of engaging and educating young people in the field of science.


The Arts Awards support projects that engage the public with biomedical science through the arts.

Humanities Awards


The BSR offers residential awards in the humanities for research in the archaeology, history, art history, society and culture of Italy from prehistory to the present.

Arts Initiatives

Innovative Teaching Activity Awards
Innovative and/or distinctive educational teaching activities may be supported. The proposed activity should support the artistic development of the students concerned, although the payment of expenses to professional artists acting in a tutorial capacity may be considered.

Arts and Technology Awards
Applications are invited from one or more institutions able to initiate a project which promotes the creative use of technology within any area of the arts. It is likely that the outcome of such projects will be a performance or exhibition in which new or emerging technologies are implemented.

Arts Bursaries

Training Bursaries
These awards provide bursaries or scholarships for highly talented students who are receiving training in the fine and performing arts. Grants are made in the form of support for maintenance, training and professional development. The selection and nomination of students is the responsibility of the arts training organisation concerned, and their nomination should be based upon a combination of outstanding talent, potential and their financial need.

Mentorship Bursaries
Mentorship awards are normally offered to institutions wishing to encourage postgraduate students to develop their teaching and administrative skills in partnership with their younger peers. All Mentorship Bursaries must be held at the training organisation concerned.

Collaborative Arts Bursaries
Awards are available to facilitate original artistic collaborations between two or more arts training institutions which lead either to a performance or an exhibition. The proposed collaborative activity must be the sole responsibility of the applying institutions, with all administrative and organisational aspects being handled by them

 

 

Culture 2007


The Culture Programme has been established to enhance the cultural area shared by Europeans, which is based on a common cultural heritage, through the development of cooperation activities among cultural operators from eligible countries, with a view to encouraging the emergence of European citizenship.

The Programme is aimed at three specific objectives:

  • promotion of the trans-national mobility of people working in the cultural sector,
  • support for the trans-national circulation of cultural and artistic works and products,
  • promotion of inter-cultural dialogue.

The Programme has a flexible, interdisciplinary approach and is focussed on the needs expressed by cultural operators during the public consultations leading up to its design.

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences

Academy film scholars program

Deadline: Annual usually October

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invites applications for its Academy film scholars program. Two awards of $25,000 are available annually to support innovative and significant works of film scholarship about aesthetic, cultural, educational, historical, theoretical or scientific aspects of theatrical motion pictures. Applicants should be established scholars, writers, historians and researchers with a significant record of achievement.

Applicants must propose a new work of film scholarship encompassing some aspect of theatrical motion picture art, science, commerce, history or theory. Works solely exploring television, video or other media arts themes are not eligible.

 

American Society for Theatre Research

Awards

There are a number of grants, awards and prizes available through the ASTR which include facilitiating exchanges, travel, events and research projects. To be eligible you would need to become a member of the ASTR

 

Association of Dance of the African Diaspora

Trailblazer Fellowships

These Fellowships provide dance artists working on dance forms of the African Diaspora the opportunity to develop their careers. The bursaries can be used to contribute the cost of classes, training, equipment, research trips and other professional development needs. Fellows will also be assigned a mentor and will follow a programme of skills training.
