Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation 

Scholarships

Deadline: Annual - usually December

Daiwa Scholarships offer young and talented UK citizens the opportunity to acquire Japanese language skills, and to access expertise and knowledge relevant to their career goals.

NO PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE OF JAPAN OR JAPANESE IS NECESSARY.

Since 1991, eighty Daiwa Scholars - including scientists, artists, academics, lawyers and architects - have benefited from the Daiwa Scholarships.

Daiwa Scholarships are provided by the Foundation to encourage better understanding between both countries.

 

 

British Federation of Women Graduates (BFWG)

Academic Awards and Scholarships for Women for Doctoral Study

Deadline: annual - late March , early April

Candidates, regardless of nationality, whose studies take place in Great Britain are eligible for these awards. They are normally within the range of £1,000 to £3,000. They are made to research students in their final year of their PhD studies 

BFWG Charitable Foundation

Foundation Grants

The Charitable Foundation offers Foundation Grants to help women graduates with their living expenses (not fees) while registered for study or research at an approved institution of higher education in Great Britain. The criteria are the proven needs of the applicant and their academic calibre. For the academic year 2004/2005 grants will only be given for the final year of PhD or D.Phil . They are not likely to exceed £2,500.

Closing date for applications: Annual - usually May

Emergency Grants

The Charitable Foundation offers Emergency Grants to graduate women who face an unforeseeable financial crisis whilst engaged in study or research at institutions of higher education in Great Britain. Grants are not likely to exceed £500. They are offered three times a year in December, March and June.

Theodora Bosanquet Bursary (TBB)

This Bursary is offered annually to women graduates whose research in History or English Literature requires a short residence in London in the summer. It provides accommodation in a hall of residence for up to 4 weeks between mid June and mid September. Closing date for applications: 31 October.

 

 

German Academic Exchange Service

Research grants for PhD students and junior scholars: 1-6 months

Deadline: Twice a year - usually April and October

A limited number of short-term research grants are available to academics in Britain and Ireland to carry out research at universities, research institutes, libraries and archives in Germany. The grants are for short-term visits of one to six months

The grants are open to PhD students who have completed at least one year's research, postdoctoral research workers, and lecturers at the start of their university career. Applicants must normally be no more than 32 years of age when taking up the grant.

The grant comprises a monthly allowance of between 795 euros and 975 euros, and a lump sum of 445 euros towards travel expenses.

One-year grants for postgraduate students

Deadline: Depends on discipline - see website

Scholarships are awarded to postgraduate students at British or Irish universities to study at any institution of higher education or carry out research in Germany.

The scholarship covers all subjects except arts, music and architecture

Successful applicants will expect to obtain, or have obtained at least an upper second class degree, should be not older than 32 years of age. Applicants should have been away from full-time studies for no longer than two years at the time of application and should not have been in Germany for more than one year at the time of application or two years when taking up the scholarship.

All applicants, including graduates of German will have to take a German language test.

 

 

International Federation of University Women

International fellowships

Deadline: Annual - usually September - October

The International Federation of University Women offers a limited number of fellowships and grants to women graduates for advanced research, study and training. The competitions are normally held every two years.

These are open only to women graduates who are members of the IFUW. The awards are to help finance short graduate and postgraduate study, research and training projects, and to serve as complementary funds for longer programmes in any branch of learning. Awards offered include:

  • the British Federation Crosby Hall fellowship of £2,500 for women wishing to study or undertake research in Britain;
  • the Canadian Federation of University Women/A Vibert Douglas international fellowship of CAN$8,000 for use in Canada or abroad;
  • the Ida Smedley Maclean international fellowship of CHF8,000 to CHF10,000;
  • the study and action programme fellowship of CHF8,000 to CHF10,000;
  • the New Zealand Federation of Graduate Women/Daphne Purves grants of CHF3,000 to CHF6,000.

Fellowships are to encourage advanced scholarship and original research by university women. Applicants must be well started on the research programme to which the application refers. Fellowships are intended to cover at least eight months of work. They are not normally given for a masters or for the first year of a PhD programme.

 

 

British Association for Slavonic and East European Studies

Postgraduate research grants

Deadline: 1 March, 1 July and 1 October every year

Postgraduate research students registered in UK institutions (students registered for doctoral or master's-by-research degrees) may apply for grants to carry out fieldwork or work in libraries and archives outside the UK or; to attend, for the purpose of presenting a paper, a conference outside the UK (additional funding is available to assist postgraduates wishing to attend the Association's Annual Conference)

Grants made will not exceed £400, and will normally be less than this. No postgraduate student may receive more than £400 (this sum does not represent an entitlement) over the course of her/his time as a postgraduate student.

 

 

Women in German Studies

Conference grants

Deadline: 1 March, 1 June, 1 September and 1 December every year

Women in German Studies has a small amount of money to provide grants to attend conferences, in the UK, Ireland or German-speaking areas, at which the applicant is giving a paper. Postgraduates including members who have recently completed a higher degree but have yet to find a permanent post, and other part-timers are eligible . Applicants must be have been members of the society for at least three months. Grants will not normally exceed £100.

 

Funding to carry out research abroad

Deadline: 1 March and 1 October

Postgraduates are eligible once during their time as a postgraduate to apply for a grant, which will not exceed £250, to carry out research abroad.

 

 

German Historical Institute London

Scholarships

Deadline: 30 Sept Annually

The German Historical Institute London awards research scholarships to British postgraduates for research visits to Germany. The awards generally last up to six months. Applicants will normally be expected to have completed one year's postgraduate research, and be studying German history or Anglo-German relations.

Prize of the German Historical Institute London

Deadline: September - annually

The German Historical Institute awards a prize annually for an outstanding work of British or German historical scholarship.

To be eligible, a work must be a PhD thesis written at a UK or German university and, as a rule, submitted to the university within the 12 months prior to the closing date on a subject matter taken from the field of UK or German history or UK-German relations or comparative studies in the 19th or 20th centuries and be unpublished

An entry which has been submitted to a UK university must be in English and on German history or UK-German relations or a comparative topic.

 

 

Menzies Centre for Australian Studies

Scholarships and Fellowships

Deadline: varies

The Menzies Centre has a number of Scholarships and Fellowships available to facilitate study in and collaboration with Australia.

 

 

Great Britain-China Educational Trust

Student awards

Deadline: Applications are considered twice a year - in the spring and November

These grants are normally between £500 and £5,000, and are for UK postgraduate students giving conference papers in China, or travelling to China for doctoral research (or for Chinese students studying for a PhD)

 

 

Entente Cordiale Scholarships

Scholarships

Deadline: Annual - usually March

Short term scholarships cover a period of 3 to 6 months to carry out doctorate or post-doctorate research in a French research institution or laboratory.

 

 

 

American Association of University Women

International fellowships programme

Deadline: Annual - usually 1 Dec for following academiuc year

These fellowships are awarded for full-time study or research to women who are not US citizens or permanent residents. Both graduate and postgraduate study is supported. Recipients of these awards may study in any country other than their own.

Funding ranges between $18,000 and $30,000.

The foundation also awards several annual home country project grants, consisting of $5,000 to $7,000. These grants support community-based projects designed to improve the lives of women and girls in the fellow's home country.

 

 

Leverhulme Trust

Study abroad studentships

Deadline: Annual - usually January

Study abroad studentships are designed to support an extended period of advanced study or research in any discipline at a centre of learning overseas, excluding the USA.

Eligible candidates must be resident in the UK and hold an undergraduate degree from a UK institution. They must be under the age of 30, or if older, make an appropriate case for special consideration. Funding will be for 12 or 24 months. Funds consist of a basic maintenance allowance of £15,000 per year.


 

Slovak Academic Information Agency and the Ministry of Education

PhD scholarships

Deadline: Spring and Autumn each year

The Slovak Academic Information Agency and the Ministry of Education invite applications for its PhD scholarships. The scholarships are available for foreign PhD students to take a part of PhD study over a period of one to 12 months at Slovak higher education institutions or research institutes of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. Applicants from the following countries can apply: European Union member states, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Canada, US, Australia, New Zealand, Egypt and the Republic of South Africa.

The monthly stipend ranges from SKK14,000 to SKK30,000.
